A beginner''s guide to modern board games
You may remember playing Monopoly with family, Risk with cousins on a never-ending afternoon, or Clue at a birthday party.
These are classics. But the world of board games has exploded since we were kids. Today there are thousands of titles with innovative mechanics, varied themes, and production quality that doesn''t even compare.
This guide is an entry point. No jargon.
1. What changed since the 90s?
Three things:
- Game length: modern games typically end in 30-90 minutes. No "afternoon-long sessions that never finish".
- Interesting decisions: less luck, more choice. Every move matters.
- Integrated theme: the rules "make sense" with the theme. You feel like you''re building an empire, exploring a dungeon, growing a farm — not just moving pieces.
2. Where to start?
Some categories to explore:
- Quick games (15-30 min): Pulse, Sushi Go!, Love Letter
- Family (45-60 min): Caleidoscópio, Splendor, Ticket to Ride
- Mid-strategy (60-90 min): Marés do Norte, Catan, Carcassonne
- Party (15-25 min, 4-8 people): Festa no Vale, Codenames, Dixit
3. One last tip
Start with 1 or 2 games. Resist the urge to buy 10. Better to play 2 well than have 10 forgotten on the shelf.
Have a good game.
